He’d provoke her, often, and then just smile as she took the bait. He’d provoke her because if she was yelling at him, she was still talking. If she was sulking or glaring or, even that one time, punching, she was still interacting. She was still responding. She wasn’t like the others, who ignored him, who let him carry on, who didn’t engage because “oh, that’s just Wyoming, you get used to him”. She didn’t get used to him.

That’s what he liked most about her.

So he sneered at her, laughed at her, made snide sarcastic comments and looked down on her, poked her when she messed up in training and teased her when she messed up on mission, maliciously, never jokingly.

And she gave it back, she gave back sneers and glares, muttering and yelling, angry snapping of harsh, bitter words, furious narrowing of her eyes, almost hitting, almost punching, and that one time she actually did.

He did it because she hated with such intense, flawless passion. Such incredible drive and instinct and desire. He did it because her hatred, he thought, must also be a lot like her love.
